Growing Up Roman
- The Father was the head of the family and household.
- He had the power to control, enslave, or even kill a family member.
- The mother took care of the children and ran the house, as well as host parties and do the marketing.
- Occasionally a woman would be able to get an education, own her own business, or own her own property.
- The children grew up with strict discipline and were obediant towards their parents.
- They were taught writing, reading, and standard morals.
- The boys were taught how to be good soldiers and farmers by their fathers.
- The girls were taught how to properly run the house by their mothers.
- The lower classes had basic education, and the higher classes had more opportunities to further thier education.
- All Romans believed in dedication, discipline, and sacrifice to the republic and the family.
- Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, became the Roman goddess, Venus.
- Ares, the Greek god of war, became the Roman god, Mars.
- Zeus, the Greek god of gods, became the Roman god, Jupiter.
- Vesta was the Roman goddess of the hearth.
- Roman families worshipped the gods and goddesses in private.
- Apollo was the god of music, healing, light and truth. An important daily task Apollo had to do was to harness his chariot with horses and pull the sun across the sky. (Roman Gods)
- Mars was the god of war, spring, growth in nature, agriculture, terror, anger, revenge, courage and fertility. The Romans considered him as the protector of cattle and he was considered second in importance following Jupiter. He was also the Greek god Ares. (Roman Gods)
